Why Edinburgh is Top of the List for Britain’s House Hunters

Searching for the perfect dream home may be one of Britain’s most popular armchair sports and it seems that for UK house hunters, Edinburgh is the top of the list, even beating central London.

In a recent study by property portal Zoopla, it was revealed that the Scottish capital came in as the leading property hotspot for UK house buyers with 145% more enquiries than the UK average over the last twelve months. The city beat South London’s Croydon, which came in second with 104% more enquiries than average.

As well as analysing the volume of email enquiries sent to estate agents between the period of 1 April 2016 and 1 April 2017, the research looked at key search terms used by potential buyers. Top of the criteria for Edinburgh house hunters were homes with garages and wider searches across Scotland showed growing interest in coastal homes with potential sea views.

As we have reported throughout this year, demand for property in the capital has consistently outstripped supply with properties selling quicker and achieving higher prices than at any point for almost a decade. It’s not surprising therefore to see Edinburgh topping the list of the most searched for places among UK home buyers.

With its lively bars and restaurants, beautiful architecture and surrounding countryside and of course world famous Fringe Festival, Edinburgh continues to uphold its reputation as one of the UK’s favourite cities.

The challenges of building new homes in a historic city mean that demand and competition from buyers remains consistently high. With low interest rates and mortgage lending and economic conditions more favourable than we have seen in recent years, home-ownership in Edinburgh remains attractive for those looking to live in the capital and investors alike.
